SODIUM CARBOXYMETHYL CELLULOSE(CMC)

【CAS】9004-32-4

Alias: Carboxymethylcellulose sodium;
CMC-Na

Chemical Formula: C6H7O2(OH)2CH2COONa

【Structural Formula】

1、‌Product Property‌

Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) is a white to off-white, odorless, hygroscopic powder. It dissolves readily in water to form viscous, colloidal solutions, with viscosity depending on concentration, temperature, and degree of substitution (DS). CMC is insoluble in organic solvents and exhibits excellent stability across a wide pH range (2–10). As a non-toxic and biodegradable polymer, it serves as a thickener, stabilizer, and binder in food, pharmaceuticals, and industrial applications.

3. Application Scope and Usage

CMC-Na serves as a multifunctional food additive, primarily used as a thickener, stabilizer, and moisture-retention agent in various products. It improves texture in ice cream, prevents syneresis in dairy products, and enhances mouthfeel in beverages. The compound acts as a binder in baked goods and a suspension agent in dressings/sauces. In low-fat products, it mimics fat functionality. Pharmaceutical applications include tablet binding and controlled-release formulations.

4. Package and Storage

CMC-Na is packaged in 25 kg multi-layer kraft paper bags with polyethylene lining or 20 kg fiber drums. Storage requires a dry, ventilated environment below 25°C with relative humidity under 65%. Containers must remain sealed to prevent moisture absorption and caking. Avoid direct sunlight and store away from strong oxidizers. Under optimal conditions, shelf life extends to 24 months.
