LAS is formed by neutralizing dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid with sodium peroxide. It is a commonly used anionic surfactant.

It has excellent cleaning properties and is widely used in fields such as laundry detergents, household liquid detergents, industrial cleaning agents, and agricultural emulsifiers. The powder form is made with dry materials containing sulfates as fillers, and therefore is not suitable for formulations with high purity requirements.
