The sulfonic acid group is a strongly water-soluble and highly acidic group. All sulfonic acids are water-soluble and highly acidic compounds. For example, naphthalene dissolves in ether but does not dissolve in water, while β-naphthalene sulfonic acid dissolves in water but does not dissolve in ether. The sulfonic acid groups in aromatic sulfonic acid molecules can be replaced by hydroxyl groups or cyanide groups, which are intermediates for the preparation of phenols and nitriles.
