Alias:THF, Oxolane, 1,4-Epoxybutane

Chemical formula: C4H8O

Molecular weight:72.11 g/mol

【Structural Formula】

1. Product Property

Tetrahydrofuran (THF) is a colorless, volatile liquid with a pungent ether-like odor. It is highly polar and completely miscible with water and most organic solvents. THF has a low viscosity and high solvency power, making it ideal for dissolving polymers and resins. It is highly flammable (flash point: -14°C) and forms explosive peroxides upon prolonged exposure to air. Its boiling point is 66°C, and it readily evaporates at room temperature.

3. Application Scope and Usage

Tetrahydrofuran is a versatile solvent widely used in the production of polymers such as polytetramethylene ether glycol (PTMEG), a key component in spandex fibers. It is also employed in pharmaceutical synthesis, agrochemicals, and as a reaction medium in Grignard and organometallic reactions. In the coatings and adhesives industry, THF is valued for its strong solvency and fast evaporation rate. Additionally, it is used in the extraction of active pharmaceutical ingredients and in the formulation of specialty chemicals.

4. Package and Storage

THF should be stored in tightly sealed, light-resistant containers made of stainless steel, aluminum, or glass, under an inert atmosphere such as nitrogen to prevent peroxide formation. It is typically packaged in drums, IBCs, or ISO tanks. Storage areas should be cool, dry, well-ventilated, and away from ignition sources. Containers should be kept away from oxidizing agents, acids, and light. Regular testing for peroxide content is recommended for long-term storage.
