Triethylamine

【CAS】121-44-8

Chemical formula: C6H15N

Molecular weight:101.19

【Structural Formula】

1. Product Property

Triethylamine (molecular formula: C6H15N), also known as N,N-diethyl ethylamine, is the simplest tertiary amine with three identical substituents. It possesses typical tertiary amine properties, including salt formation and oxidation. The Hinsberg test for triethylamine shows no reaction. It appears as a colorless to pale yellow transparent liquid with a strong ammonia-like odor and emits a slight smoke in air. Boiling point: 89.5°C, relative density (water = 1): 0.70, relative density (air = 1): 3.48, slightly soluble in water, and soluble in ethanol and ether. Its aqueous solution is alkaline. It is flammable, and its vapor can form explosive mixtures with air, with an explosion limit of 1.2% to 8.0%. It is toxic and highly irritating.

3. Application Scope and Usage

Triethylamine can be used as a solvent and raw material in the organic synthesis industry. It can be used to produce catalysts for polycarbonate by phosgene method, polymerization inhibitors for tetrafluoroethylene, rubber vulcanization accelerators, special solvents in paint strippers, anti-hardening agents for enamel, surfactants, preservatives, fungicides, ion exchange resins, dyes, fragrances, drugs, high-energy fuels and liquid rocket propellants, etc.

4. Package and Storage

Triethylamine is typically packaged in 200 L steel drums or ISO tanks with airtight seals to prevent moisture absorption and oxidation. Storage should be in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from heat sources and oxidizing agents. Containers must be grounded to avoid static electricity hazards. The recommended storage temperature is below 30°C, with nitrogen blanketing to minimize peroxide formation. Shelf life is 12 months under proper conditions. Transport as a flammable liquid (UN 1296) with appropriate hazard labeling. Workers must wear chemical-resistant gloves, goggles, and respirators during handling.
