Sodium nitrite

【CAS】7632-00-0

Chemical formula: NaNO2

Molecular weight: 69

【Structural Formula】

1、‌Product Property‌

Sodium nitrite appears as white to yellowish crystalline powder or granules, odorless with a slightly salty taste. Highly soluble in water (82g/100mL at 20°C) and liquid ammonia, weakly soluble in ethanol/methanol. Its aqueous solution is alkaline (pH~9). Thermally decomposes at 320°C, releasing toxic nitrogen oxides. Oxidizes gradually in air to form sodium nitrate.

3. Application Scope and Usage

Sodium nitrite has a wide range of uses. As a food additive, sodium nitrite (NaNO2) has the functions of inhibiting bacteria, color development, antioxidation and improving flavor, and is widely used in the preservation of meat products. In addition to being used as a food preservative, it is also an excellent color fixative and flavor enhancer for meat products, especially widely applied in the meat curing industry. Sodium nitrite can also be used as an anti-corrosion agent in the steel products manufacturing industry and a coagulant in the construction industry. Sodium nitrite is also an anodic corrosion inhibitor and is widely used in the machinery industry. Sodium nitrite reacts with the metal surface to form a dense oxide film on it. This protective layer hinders the ionization of the inner metal layer and suppresses the electrochemical anodic reaction, thereby slowing down the electrochemical corrosion of the metal.

4. Package and Storage

Packaged in 25kg polyethylene-lined woven bags or 50kg iron drums. Store in cool (<25°C), dry, ventilated areas away from acids, flammables, and reductants. Shelf life: 24 months. Seal tightly to prevent moisture absorption and oxidation.
